If hockey games were played as a three period series instead of just one game Blake would’ve won the series 2 periods to 1 last night. Unfortunately for Blake that’s not how it works. They lost the second period badly and it cost them the game.
After a slow start for Edina they turned a 0-1 deficit after the first period into a 4-1 lead going into the third. CC Bowlby tied the game at 1s at 7:53 of the second with assists coming from Mallory Uihlein and Annie Keuhl. Just a minute later a goal from Hannah Chorske with the lone assist going to Olivia Swaim gave Edina the 2-1 lead. CC Bowlby pumped in two more goals to give her the hat trick in the period and Edina the 4-1 lead. Newcomer Katie Davis added an assist on each of Bowlby’s last two goals.
To start the third Edina went into a bit of a shell in an attempt to preserve the three goal lead and the victory. Maddie Wethington, after scoring the first goal for Blake, recognized that the change in strategy would allow her to be more aggressive offensively. She put the Blake team on her back and darn near brought them back from the abyss by scoring 2 more goals in the third to give her the hat trick and cut Edina’s lead to just one goal. Edina was able to hold on for the 4-3 victory despite being outshot by Blake 13-2 in third and 38-27 overall.
Edina and Blake are both 1-1 to start the season. Does that mean Andover, at 2-0 with the season opening win against Edina, leapfrogs them both as the new #1 ranked team in the state?
