Wayzata vs Mounds View
I predicted Wayzata would win 4-1. I was right in that they would give up one goal in the W. I was really wrong in how many goals they would score! Nine of them to be exact.
Gretchen Branton’s name was all over the score sheet- 4 goals and 3 assists. She was in on 7 of the 9 goals. Pretty impressive night for the sophomore Clarkson commit. Alexa Ocel/Sacred Heart had a goal and 3 assists. Urban had a couple goals. Freshman Sloane Matthews added a goal and an assist. Emily Wisnewski/Clarkson tallied 3 helpers. I am happy to see Wisnewski get in on the action early. As good as Wisnewski is she doesn’t get enough credit because she doesn’t contribute a ton offensively- a total of 9 points last year. But she is as good of a defensive defenseman as anyone and makes a great first pass. In this day and age we lose sight of that kind of player which is unfortunate.
I was a bit surprised by the night Teagan Johnson had. She had an off night for whatever reason. She’s a much better goalie than what the box score indicated. She will bounce back.
Lourdes vs Red Wing
With Taylor Heise gone I figured Lourdes was primed to get the W. But 10-0?! What an offensive showing for the Eagles. Emma Schmitz got hers with 4 and 1. Clara Billings with 2 and 1. Speedster Sarah Dravis with 1 and 2. And Sophomore forward Abby Wick getting in on the action with 3 assists. 10 Lourdes players with at least one point. If they can spread the production around like that all year they will have some success.
Corrin Hanson with the 10 save shutout.
Notable Performances
Gretchen Branton wasn’t the only player to have a 7 point night. Billi Connell, a 9th grader from Luverne had 5 and 2. Her teammate junior Claire Baustian had 2 and 3 in a 11-0 win over Morris/Benson.
Senior Lauren Burris and sophomore Grace Peterson each had 5 points for Mound Westonka in their 6-1 win over New Ulm.
Junior Elizabeth Molnau had a hat trick and the game winner for Woodbury in the 5-4 victory over Rochester John Marshall
